Cognitive Processing Therapy: PTSD treatment

There are many treatment options for PTSD. Seth’s Mom will continue discussing what these options are so you can make an informed decision. Of course, you should work with your family and a trained medical professional. Talk to your doctor she knows better than we do. We just love you bunches 🙂

What is CPT

In an article by National Center for PTSD , Cognitive Processing Therapy, or CPT, is described as

CPT teaches you how to evaluate and change the upsetting thoughts you have had since your trauma. By changing your thoughts, you can change how you feel.

CPT is a talk therapy method that helps you understand your negative thoughts and teaches you to change them. By changing “negative self-talk” you can change your overall mood. Have you ever had a moment where you kept doubting yourself and all you could hear in your head were bad thoughts and words (**TRIGGER WARNING**): “you’re not smart enough” “you’re weak” “you didn’t do enough” “its your fault.” These are examples of some of the thoughts CPT helps you change so you can heal and feel better..

The article goes on to say

CPT teaches you a new way to handle these upsetting thoughts. In CPT, you will learn skills that can help you decide whether there are more helpful ways to think about your trauma. You will learn how to examine whether the facts support your thought or do not support your thought. And ultimately, you can decide whether or not it makes sense to take a new perspective.
