Government shutdown. Impact on disabilities and mental health services

The recent government shutdown has scared many of us in the community. We’re wondering what will happen to the critical services disabled Americans need. It’s a scary situation. It leaves us with many unanswered questions.

A government shutdown is not what it seems. Some federal employees are considered “critical” staff and must report for duty. Meaning, MANY CIVIL SERVICE AND MILITARY PERSONNEL WILL WORK WITHOUT BEING PAID. According to the Department of Health and Human Services about 50% or staff will report for duty during a government shut down.

How about services? Many disability and mental health services will continue to be available during the shutdown. HHS has provided a summary of services that will be available during these uncertain times. The list also includes suspended services.

Our community may also have questions abou future funding. The National Association of States United for Aging and Disabilty (NASUAD) provides a list of current and proposed spending for disabilities, aging, and mental health services.
